3 Step Plan for Scheduling with Kids

"What's the point of scheduling stuff when the schedule is CONSTANTLY being disrupted, up-ended, and thrown out the friggin' window?"

I get it.

That's exactly what I deal with on the regular too, Mama; you are NOT alone!! There isn't a struggle more real than that of a mother trying to maintain a schedule. Right?

So.... How can you manage your schedule, with kids, without losing your ever-loving MIND?

Here are some tips which have REALLY helped me:

1. Plan out your week.

If you don't actively set aside time to just PLAN, you're not gonna be very effective at planning. Redundant right? I know. But let that sink in.  (I'll wait.....)

Hand the kids off to Daddy for an hour each Sunday night. Ask Mom or BFF to watch the kids each Tuesday morning, or do this on Wednesday night while the kids are at activities... WHATEVER time works best for you, make it a priority to have at least one hour set aside each week to PLAN the next 7 days.

Have an outline for what you WANT your week to look like, and feel free to color-code if you'd like (purple is personal, blue is family, green is household, etc). I refer to this as my general "Weekly Plan" which can be reused from week to week, whenever possible. (I know, sometimes you've gotta juggle inconsistent work schedules, but this can be adjusted accordingly). Having this structure/outline in place will make your life SO much easier as you plan from week to week.

Here's an example:

(Color Coding is kinda my jam..)

2. Prioritize your task list.

Now, during this planning time, it’s time to prioritize everything that you’re wanting to do this week. Get everything out of your head, either onto a piece of paper or into an electronic checklist (not 8 different notebooks in 3 different rooms… Yes, I SEE you!!! Keep it all in ONE place, like an Asana list or a Google Doc, or even a list next to your planner or in your purse). Once you’ve brain-dumped, go through and prioritize the list by importance, labeling the MOST important things first.

(Now.. If you’re anything like me, you’re probably thinking, “um… I can’t fit everything onto just ONE piece of paper, and the electronic list won’t even fit on my screen,, and how can I possibly work through so many THINGS?? It’s overwhelming!!” Yep, I hear you. I have some AWESOME tips for prioritizing your task list, but since it’s a LOT of information, I'll be sharing it in a separate post, so keep an eye out!!)

3. Schedule your tasks into your planner/calendar.

Whether you’re a paper planner person, or you prefer to go with electronic (PLEASE, do what works best for YOU!! Check out this blog post about WHY this is important), go through your planner for the upcoming week and start scheduling your tasks, starting with the highest priorities FIRST!!

By this point, you might be hearing the kids driving your husband crazy in the other room, but hang in there... This is worth the effort, Mama. :)

Have you ever heard of the analogy about “putting the big rocks in first”? If not, check out this video before proceeding. I really want you to understand the value of KEEPING those big rocks first. <3

This is where that colorful weekly plan sheet will come in handy; if you need to schedule a task pertaining to your household, you just schedule it during your first available “household” time. Do this for your ENTIRE week, including personal time, family time, sleep, work, house, business….. and you’ll be good to go!!

And please, for the love of ALL that if good in this world, schedule your MEALS!!! Cuz ain’t nobody got time for “hangry,” am I right??

BONUS STEP: Stop expecting perfection!

There have been SO many times in my life when things didn’t work out perfectly, but they still worked out really WELL, and I learned a LOT from the process; I’m SOOOO glad that I kept putting forth the effort, even with the hiccups and disruptions!! On the other hand, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve given up on something GREAT just because it wasn’t turning out “perfectly” by my definition... It’s so sad, because those opportunities STILL could have blessed so many!!

I just want you to know that you’re GOOD ENOUGH. As you ARE. Your efforts are worth celebrating, and your endeavors can still be a HUGE blessing, even when they’re less than perfect!! Maybe even ESPECIALLY since they’re less than perfect.

I mean, honestly.

You have an opportunity to show that it’s POSSIBLE to have abundance, happiness, success, and fulfillment even WITH the imperfections! You are an inspiration, because you will show all of the flawed people (i.e. EVERYBODY who sees your progress) that these blessings can STILL abound in imperfection! How cool is THAT??

The best witnesses to your efforts are your children. If they see that you're taking intentional action & actively pursuing your goals, they're a LOT more likely to pick up those habits as well. As you fail forward, you teach by example how to manage your emotions through adversity, and you show your children how to work WITH your circumstances as a WINNER, not playing the victim card. By empowering yourself, you're teaching them to do the same. <3

Just keep this in mind: "imperfectly started" is going to bless you and your family (AND your potential clients) WAY more than "perfectly stagnant." ;)

Now, before I wrap this up, I want to acknowledge that I understand that this might seem a bit time-consuming up front, but here’s the deal:

When you invest the time to plan ahead, you're actually SAVING a lot of time in the long run.

You're no longer wandering aimlessly around the house in your pajamas at 11am on Tuesday, wondering what you were supposed to do today, because you can't find that stinkin' To-Do list (must be in spiral #237), and you're not sure where your energy would best be spent because EVERYTHING is demanding your attention, especially the kids.

You're no longer overwhelmed, nor stressed, nor burnt out, because everything is scheduled!!

If you remember something that needs to be done, you know exactly where to schedule it in, or at least write it down so you can schedule it later.

If ever you get side-tracked by the kids, you can just jump RIGHT back in once the kids are squared away, because every time frame has a purpose; you know what area of your life is scheduled for your attention, and you're able to focus more effectively on just ONE thing at a time.

I’m not guaranteeing that you’ll have 100% success in your scheduling; when kids are involved, they have a tendency to demolish our schedules sometimes. Even literally, as you can see in my recent Instagram post:

But what I’m wanting to emphasize is that you will make more PROGRESS when your time has a specific purpose. If you need to reschedule stuff, go with the flow. If you need to just drop your entire schedule for the day, you at least have a record of what you were GOING to do, so it can be rescheduled effectively.

And I've found that this is MUCH more productive than not planning at all. If ever I try to "fly by the seat of my pants," I somehow lose track of those "pants" somewhere along the way!! Maybe not literally, but I DO have young children who are prone to hanging all over me and pulling on my clothes ALL THE TIME... Just sayin'... But having a plan in place, I feel that I've got my booty covered, just in case I DO happen to have some cooperation from the kids. ;)

This is a process which will bless not only YOU, but the clients you serve AND your family as well. Above all else, be present and enjoy the moment. Because even if your plans appear to be going down the drain, things are ALWAYS working out FOR you in the long run. Trust this, be grateful for the moment, and breathe. Tomorrow is another day, and as long as you keep trying, you'll figure it out. :)

You’ve GOT this, Mama.

Your efforts are a blessing, and so are YOU. <3

If you have any scheduling tips that work great in YOUR life (especially if you're also dealing with kids), please share them in the comments below!!

Just do YOUR thing!!

Adopt Time Management practices that align with YOUR style!!

I recently saw an article about time management (it's so amazing, go read it!! You're welcome!!), and it was super inspiring for me. My favorite quote was this:

"It works for me, and that’s the most important thing, because if it doesn’t, then you simply won’t use it." - Lucy O'Connor"

That being said, I've always been a paper planner type of person. Electronic planners are awesome for scheduling with clients, coordinating with teams, and setting up some personal reminders, but if my day isn't planned out on PAPER and in FRONT of me every morning when I walk into the kitchen, I'm a lot more likely to get distracted, then side-tracked, then, well... LOST.  #squirrel

One of my caring, concerned, and well-intentioned mentors insisted that I NEEDED to go entirely digital, because it would make my life SO much easier!!! It would reduce the "stuff" in my physical space, I could access my calendar at ALL times via my phone, and it would just be SO brilliant and perfect for me!! :D

Um, that sounds Awesome!!!!!

Well, I like to consider myself as being "coachable" and willing to respond to suggestions and guidance when given from a credible source such as my super-qualified mentor (she's seriously awesome!!), so I tried it for a couple weeks.

Confession: I lost track of everything!!!

AutoINcorrect had me pulling my hair out every time I tried to add another event or task to my schedule. There was also some lag on my devices, which meant it sometimes took me 5 minutes just to add one item to my calendar, and I would sometimes even forget what I was adding by the time everything loaded up properly. #MomBrain

I was feeling frustrated about having to open the app on my phone every time I had forgotten what I needed to be doing at that point (which was often, I'll be honest... I'm telling you, Mom Brain is a REAL thing!!), and half the time, I would get distracted by my notifications and get caught up in texts, emails, or (dun-dun-dun!!!) Facebook(Just me?... No?... Thank goodness!!)

Not to mention all the times I accidentally dismissed the friggin' notifications! Because then I got distracted AGAIN as I would go back into the app to figure out WHAT the notification even SAID before I impulsively swiped it away into oblivion..... And the most frequently lost items were lost as my kids dismissed the notification because they wanted to "help Mommy" by tapping the screen... (Thanks, but no thanks, guys!!)

It was driving me NUTS.

(Hehehe!! Okay, but seriously...)

Finally, I said "SCREW IT!!" (Literally, I said it OUT LOUD one day), and just pulled out my paper planner again. Aaaaand there was much rejoicing!! *crowd cheering*

I could plan my day without my phone in my face. And every time I walked by my planner (multiple times per day; it's in the kitchen. Like #BAM), I was reminded of what I needed to be focusing on next. I could use my simple highlighters or different colored pens instead of trying to sift through the different colors for tasks and events on my phone (which green was it that I was using for client work again?? I'm OCD, I want them to match, and I kept choosing the WRONG one. The struggle is REAL).

No more AutoINcorrect. No more waiting for apps to load or missing notifications. No more worrying about missing things if my phone went dead or missing. Nothing could get accidentally deleted by a toddler on a tapping rampage. (Party on, Garth!!)

It was liberating!!

Literally, I'm pretty sure angels were singing. And I'm not gonna lie, the Hallelujah Chorus was my frequent song of choice when it came to "singing the random tune that comes into your head" sessions as I was able to get back on my Bandwagon and start rockin' and rollin' again. (Insert "flex" emoji here!!)

Now, let me be clear about something; I don't HATE my electronic calendar. It's very useful, and I use it as an occasional reference, especially in working with scheduling my clients & coordinating with other people. But it is NOT the star of my show

I'm SO, SOOOO grateful I decided to stick with my own intuition on this and do my OWN thing!! I tried another method, it didn't work, so I simply went back to what WAS working for me, and I haven't looked back or regretted my decision since. <3

I just want to reassure you that trying new things will ALWAYS teach you something new about yourself; either you will figure out something that works BETTER, or you'll find out what doesn't work AT ALL for your style. Either way, you're growing, learning, and progressing, so don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone!! And if you're feeling confused or overwhelmed in the midst of trying to figure things out, it's time to get quiet and listen to your heart, your soul, your instincts. You truly do know what's best. ;) A good friend of mine gave this advice:

"If you want to find your path in life, get quiet and listen to what your heart is whispering to you." —Erin Taylor of Building Connected Communities

What's most important is that what you're doing is WORKING for YOU.

If it's motivating you to take action toward your goals, keep doing it!! If it's inspiring you and energizing you, GO for it!! Always consider suggestions to a reasonable extent, and be willing to try new things, but if it ain't broke, and you KNOW it works for you, stop trying to FIX it!! ;)

Please note: This is not permission to just stagnate where you ARE and claim that you're "trying" if you're really just hiding away & giving in to your fears!!! (Yep, I see you.) I'm talking about doing the stuff that's GETTING you somewhere. Taking ACTION and feeling a sense of peace, KNOWING that there is an effective, productive, and supportive process in place to help you move forward in your business & your life. If you're struggling to find something which works for you, CLICK HERE to apply for a Clarity Call: together, we can assess where you are, what's not working, and how I can be of service to you. :)

Just make sure you adopt the Time Management practices that align with YOUR style, purpose, and goals. You have so many options for proven, effective methods!! Just because ONE doesn't work for you doesn't mean that NONE will; keep trying, and you will be blessed for your efforts. So whether you're a Digital Diva rocking the apps and notes with grace and ease, or if you prefer to stick with the old-school paper....

Just make sure you're in alignment with YOUR soul, YOUR purpose, YOUR desires...

And YOUR planning style. ;)

Everything WILL work out - Keep GOING!!

First off, allow me to say....

I'm back!! *yaaayyy!!*

Life has been throwing some wrenches into my plans lately, but this has been teaching me some VERY valuable lessons!! I'm so excited to be getting back into my groove and ROCKING it out again!! <3

Now onto the topic at hand, which has been REALLY solidifying my resolve and inspiring me lately, through the challenges and adversity, and through essentially pushing the "reset" button on some stuff:

Everything ALWAYS works out for our good!!

Honestly!! It may not be what we EXPECT, but it will always be for our GOOD!! <3

I'll be totally honest here... Sometimes, the hardest thing for me to do is to just TRUST the process! There are so many snags and hiccups and disruptions along the way, and it can be very discouraging sometimes!! I get it.

But there is HOPE!!

No matter what the challenges and frustrations, your persistence will yield great blessings and growth; hang in there!!

My son's absolute favorite movie right now is Zootopia. We introduced it to him this summer, and he is OBSESSED!! It's such a sweet movie, and it has an amazing message. I'm not going to spoil it for you, but let's just say, things don't work out exactly as the little bunny expected; they actually turned out BETTER as a result of all the hiccups and frustrations she had along the way!! If you haven't seen this movie yet, I would totally recommend it!!! <3

Your journey is going to be very similar, in many ways.

Pick yourself back up and keep fighting, ESPECIALLY if things seem to be going in the exact OPPOSITE direction of what you were planning; The Divine must have something MUCH better in store for you!!

The greatest victories arise from the greatest challenges and tribulations, after all. You're meant for greatness,, and the only way to obtain such is so persevere through the tough times. You can try to avoid the problems and downfalls as much as you want, but you will not grow toward your potential until you face them head-on and go THROUGH them! Here's one little reminder which helps me muster the courage to face some of the "scary" stuff:

Trials and tribulations are temporary, but YOU ARE ETERNAL!! Face those challenges head-on, KNOWING that you will outlast ANY challenge which lies ahead. Have confidence and TRUST that you will be given everything you'll need to overcome ANYTHING which comes up. Even when things seem to be falling apart, dig deeper, plug into your emotional, spiritual, and physical power sources, and you will find success!!

After all... Diamonds are only created by intense pressure over time. Your potential is solidifying and manifesting as the diamond YOU are meant to be through these "crazy random" experiences. ;) A friend of mine also shared some great insight about this:

"The best of the sailors happen to have survived the worst of the worst storms." -Becky Achieng.

So hang in there!! You're being refined, you're being strengthened, and you're being truly empowered as you overcome these challenges. Life IS supporting you, the process IS working, and the ONLY way to be defeated is to GIVE UP.

You've got this. I believe in you!! <3

Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD...

Having skill isn't enough; if you're not PASSIONATE, you're wasting your time!!

"You're so professional!"
"You have excellent diction and grammar!"
"You would be amazing in a corporate position!"

These statements pretty much sum up the feedback I received while attending a Career Development Workshop several years ago. My husband had just lost his job, and at that point, I wasn't working. So I decided to attend this workshop and see what I would be most effective in pursuing until my husband could get back up on his feet.

I was flattered by the feedback and support, but at the same time, I was cringing... CORPORATE?? ME??? No way.... I wouldn't necessarily say that I have issues with authority, but... Okay, I have issues with authority. My first reaction when somebody tells me I "need" to do something is a defiant "WHY??" or "Who are YOU to tell me what I NEED to do?"

Attitude, much? Yeah... Sometimes... ;)

But the feedback I received wasn't unfounded; I can be very professional. I have very strong people skills. Managing an office staff or assisting some high-up leaders would be a very effective employment option for me. I can organize. I have awesome phone edict. I have been trained in film and theater acting, so no matter what my actual mood, I could come off (believably) as professional and pleasant.

But I didn't WANT to.

The thought of corporate hustle, demanding hours, constantly being under somebody else's boot...

No, thank you.

I wasn't passionate about corporate life, and being in such an environment would equate to stress, frustration, and severe drains on my energy and overall well-being. So in choosing to pursue such, I would be deterring my energy AWAY from that which brings DOES bring me joy and enthusiasm;

NOT my idea of success in life!!

So let's take some time today and reevaluate where your passions truly are. Do you love artistic endeavors? Do you prefer numbers? Do you love public speaking? Where and when do you feel like you're being the BEST version of yourself?

Whatever lights you up; DO THAT!!

Even if you don't necessarily have the skills yet!! Skills can be learned, but PASSION comes from the heart. Follow your heart, and you WILL be supported by your Divinity. That's when you're truly aligned with what you were INTENDED to do here, in this life. You will not just survive; you will THRIVE!! :D

What can you do TODAY which ignites your soul?? <3

Being visible is AWESOME.

Let's face it.

Being visible online is KEY to your success. But as entrepreneurs, sometimes it can feel a bit intimidating to be "in the public eye" with all the Trolls and Haters out there. #creeps

But here's the truth: You CANNOT make an impact on the world if you're hiding in the shadows. Period. Nobody's going to hear your message if it's not being published and shared. Nobody's going to understand what you're capable of helping them work through unless you TELL them and SHOW them.

Sharing your story and being vulnerable can be SCARY!! "What will people think?" "What if this causes problems with so-and-so?" "What if, what if, WHAT IF???"

Think about this instead:

"What if I DON'T?"

How many people are going to miss out an an AMAZING opportunity, product, fresh start, WHATEVER, because you're too scared to step up??

The most selfish thing I've seen people do is refrain from sharing their ultimate message, because they're just trying to protect their own ego. Will your message frustrate and annoy some people? Yes. Will it be severely uncomfortable for others to hear? Absolutely. But that's on THEM, not you.

Because you know what? They need to be knocked out of their comfort zones, and YOU are the one to do it. How do I know? Because it's on YOUR heart!! YOU are capable of sharing whatever needs to be said!! If you aren't, you would NOT have that desire in your heart. I'm TELLING you. This is legit.

And here's what happens when you start stepping up to your potential and sharing what's on your heart:

  • You start to feel energized!! After sharing your heart in that Facebook Group or posting that video to YouTube, you're going to feel AWESOME!! (Yay!! You did it!!) This happens because you're in alignment with YOUR purpose, which naturally lights you up!!
  • Your action invites Divine Intervention to occur! You're 100% supported by your Creative Source (whoever/whatever you believe that to be) when you are taking action toward your heart's desires. THAT source placed those desires in your heart in the first place, and you will be supported in pursuing them!!
  • You start to see momentum building toward making your impact, especially as you start to receive feedback from those who are grateful and willing to receive.. "You really, really helped me with this, Thank you!" is one of the best messages to read, KNOWING that your message is making a difference for at least ONE person. <3

These types of feelings are worth every trial and inconvenience of being Visible in today's Social Media Market. Once you're clear on WHY you're wanting to do something, your visibility will launch you toward success. That fear you're feeling? Acknowledge it. Thank it for trying to keep you "safe." Then plow forward anyway!! You've GOT this!! You are SUPPORTED!! :D

What are YOUR favorite ways to be visible as an entrepreneur? :)

You are WORTH it!! <3
